A young science
Quality Improvement is still a relatively young science, although many of the underlying techniques go back over six decades. Although there are a number of systematic reviews of improvement science, these have been subject to significant criticism. We are working to develop the evidence base, both in terms of evaluating quality improvement interventions and in terms of the available tools and techniques that underpin improvement. An example is a tool that we have developed to measure patient experience. This tool has successfully been used as an outcome measure in a Rapid Process Improvement Workshop related to alcohol and drug services in NHS Highland.
We are partnering with the Rural Health and Wellbeing Centre in the University of the Highlands and Islands, who have extensive experience in the evaluation of health service interventions. Further details can be found on their website.
